EWD working with NOAA on net recycling campaign
January 2006

NOAA Restoration Center has hired EWD to design communication materials and signage for their Derelict Net Recycling Program. The program is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and brings together industry, fishermen, local, state and Federal partners to proactively remove and recycle derelict nets. Derelict fishing nets retrieved by volunteer fishermen are collected in a dedicated container located on Pier 38 at Honolulu Harbor. Schnitzer Steel Hawai’i transports the debris to its facility where it is chopped and hauled to the Honolulu City and County's Hpower plant where it is converted to electricity.

Marine debris accumulation in Hawaii is affected by oceanic currents and atmospheric winds. These currents and winds generate the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, which serves to aggregate nets in Hawaiian waters from throughout the Pacific Ocean.
